the old forum for me i had to use my old password that i had before

i have tried creating a single color swatch in many different stich sizes and roll settings which i think determines how far the machine pulls down the material as it is knitting

one of my problems is the machine does not bind on properly it just doesn't seem to pick up the yarn initially i have had some discussion with gerrard about this but to no avail still not working because i was using only one color the compiler is not really set up to create the bind on properly so gerrard fixed my code manually but it still is not working properly i spent about 2 weeks back and forth with test patterns taking video footing of my machine to watch the action the initail bind on needle palcemant and thread tension is very important i think

i have even tried some of the patterns that they sent out initially but i dont have the same yarn so the y dont really work either im hoping they fix the software sonn as my wife is looking at our desk anchor that doesnt do much but has so much potential and is like @@#$%#$

if you download notepad plus plus a open source text editor you can see the code that gets compiled and look at it for yourself i

that my expeirence so far hope these guys get the software sorted out soon

Hi Bryant,

I had a lot of trouble getting started but it was mainly due to yarn breaking, so i bought some cheap acrylic yarn for the start module, which was much stronger than the pure wool i had been trying to use,

For the yarn not catching have you done this (Point 1) https://support.kniterate.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016479778-Needles-not-catching-the-yarn Initially i had the same problem until i went back and read through all of the support pages again and found this article, then all was fine - the needles caught the yarn and the acrylic yarn didnt break.

I am using an Nm2/15 yarn, and have found that these stitch sizes and roll downs work together - 5/450, 6/600, 7/750, 8/900, 9/1050, although using wool rather than acrylic, the smaller the stitch size, the more likely it is to break. 7 or bigger is best.

I still have not managed to do a bind off, as the app bugs out as soon as I hit the bind off button. I’m still hoping someone can help me on this!

Hi Everyone

We have been using our Kniterate machine now for a while, and although the software has (as you have noticed) bugs in it, it is possible to successfully create designs in the software.

We are successfully knitting scarves using 2/16 wool with 450 roll, speed 550, stitch size 7 on the font bed and stitch size 6 on the rear bed. We have just started working with other yarns and will let you know how this work progresses.

Bind-on and Bind-off both work in the software however you need to make sure you run the bind-off at a slow speed (60) otherwise you may find it drops stitches. If the yarn does not knit into the bed at the beginning of the bind-on, you may need to manually do this - We have modified our standard bind on so we do not have to do this.

We use Feeder 1 for Draw thread and Feeder 6 for bind-on. Feeders 3 & 4 are the best for knitting with.

For the draw-thread we use this as its nice and slippery. You may need to keep this in a bag of some kind so it does not get tangled at the bottom of the cone.

With regards to getting your design s working, I would suggest you validate your designs regularly and save the design regularly once you have something that is validating correctly.

Thank you for your input! But aren’t you trialing a different version of the software, as I spent ages trying to work out how to do a 2 colour reversible jacquard, like your scarves, and after several emails to support was told that this isn’t yet possible on the general release software.

Hi - You are correct, the current release does not have two color reversible yet but there should be no problems with the bind-off in the general release version of the software. All our bind-off's have been created using the general release version of the software.

I have just been into the software (design.kniterate.com), and added a bindoff which has bene validated correctly.

Hope this helps , and happy to help other Kniterate owners get over this.

For reference, Bind-off is slow (20 minutes for a 20cm scarf) so you may find it better to not bind-off on the machine, and instead use a linker.

thanks for taking the time

it seems your link to the video is broken or maybe my computer likes to play games with me

any chance of sharing a file of a swatch that has worked for you with us so that we could try it out its a big ask but im not had much success up to this point i think they should have some simple swatch files available for us machine knitting rookies (rant sorry)

Ive tried probably 15 different files that have failed maybe it my yarn not sure there is a link that Gerard put up in the other post . https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mKUd0z-KSypKVeQgMhl_ONu10atFiTnO for us to share files

the first swatch i did was one color with start and bind off start area size 4 stitch 440 roll i put it in the folder at that location if anybody wants to look at it (notepad++)

then goes to size 8 500 roll the yarn i have cotton acrylic about 6720 yds per lb which works out to 13.5 nm so double up it is about 6.75 nm (all this wool stuff is new to me so just checking )

Hi Robert Ingemarsson,

Please can you try again with the link as, like @Bryant, I wasn't able to access it.

I read through your comments again today before having yet another go at a bind off on the app, and exactly the same thing happened again. I started a new project - just a plain jersey swatch, added the start ok then added the bind off and it started from needle 1, the same as in my photo above. I am using the version of the app dated October 2020 with Firefox on an iMac. I don't know if perhaps I am somehow in an old version of the app, as I saw online that Gerard had posted it now works in Safari on Mac, but mine doesn't! My software is up to date so I don't think it's coming from my end. Any suggestions?

Did you read through my list of bugs in the first post? Are these bugs that you encounter often, as I do? Wondering what browser/hardware you are using? I have managed to use the app to programme some jacquard patterns and some stitches like rib, cable and moss, but it is really hit and miss whether I manage to get to the end of the project without the app bugging to such a degree that I have to give up and start again.

I cannot get the software to work on Safari - I always use Chrome.

Your issues that you are having:

Loss of the stitch sizes during editing designs
Yes I have this and it is reported as a defect. I currently only change the stitch sizes just before exporting the kCode.

Finding that when copying and pasting part of a design, the parameters I have edited in the side panel are, more often than not, lost and revert to the defaults.
Yes - I also have this .

Unable to use the bind off part of the app as it starts from needle 1 instead of from the needle my design begins on. And I have tried editing it but there are always "phantom" stitches that remain and give me error messages. I have spent hours trying to correct the design to make it work but have not succeeded

Error messages that I do not understand eg "Got 6, max is 5". I have no idea what this refers to so had to abandon a design I'd spent all afternoon on.
Have not seen this - Sorry - Have you reported it as a bug?

I would recommend any issues you find are raised as a support call so that they are logged and get fixed.

Hi Cadenzaclothes,

I just wanted to chime in and encourage you to hang in there with the software. Keep in mind that this is an alpha version of the code, and the Kniterate software team is hard at work on the next version. I have encountered most of the issues you mentioned but also have managed to find workarounds as well. Here are a few thoughts, to add to Robert's.

Loss of the stitch sizes: I haven't found a way to avoid this. However, once I have stitch size entered, I take a screen shot of my code and save in a digital notebook, with a photo of the knitted result, for reference to reenter the next time.
When copying and pasting part of a design, the option settings are lost: You may be able to get them back by exiting the design and editing again. For good measure, reload the browser page too. (This may or may not work every time - I haven't tested thoroughly.)
Unable to use the bind off part of the app as it starts from needle 1: This one is a mystery - I've never seen it despite countless hours with the app. The good news is it is should be fixable. Can you try a different computer? When I make swatches, I generally skip bindoff because it takes forever. Instead, I knit a few rows of stockinette and then drop the stitches from the needles - it makes a neat rolled edge that doesn't easily unravel.
Error messages that I do not understand eg "Got 6, max is 5": I have seen this one(!), and some other mystery errors. It often means I've done *something* wrong. If you switch to Pattern view in the app, it shows a red box around the offending stitch - that gives me a starting point for looking for problems.
I need to open a new tab each time I open a new design, or the designs overwrite each other: After you exit your editing session, the tab at the top of the browser window (in Firefox) still shows the name of the file you were editing. If you reload the browser page at that point it seems to reset and allows you to proceed without overwriting files.

I have found the issues generally to be with the user interface, and if you learn to adapt to the quirks (e.g., do NOT hit the delete key while editing numbers in the options menu...), you can make it produce code that makes the machine do amazing things.

Thank you Robert Ingemarsson and plasmatopia - it is reassuring to know that it is not just me having all the problems - I was starting to feel as though I was jinxed or stupid, or both!
Do you have any idea about the timeline for the new software release? Katy Grieve mentioned a week or so back that, all being well, the reversible jacquard was imminent, but I haven’t heard anything since...

Hi Everyone,

We appreciate your feedback on the types of issues you have been facing and your creative solutions around these quirks. As much as this forum is a tool to communicate with our users and see where some errors may be re-occurring, we see it as a wonderful tool for the community to share experiences and learn from each other, so thank you for your input here.

We appreciate your video contributions Robert. Perhaps I can shed some light on further issues and bugs raised:

The new app version is still being developed and we hope to be able to release this in March. Then the reversible jacquard option shall be possible to knit. The current design app version is from October 2020.
The issues you face with the bind-on have been reported to our software team and we are trying to solve these issues as best we can. But for now, we do still recommend a manual intervention to overcome this issue of the yarn not catching and/or getting your code fixed manually by one of the Kniterate Team.
If you are having repeating issues with the design app, we recommend to:

try a different browser - Chrome shows the best result, Firefox and Safari on Mac show some issues
close and reopen the app
try a different computer

Loss of the stitch sizes – this has been reported as defect to our software team who are working on improving this in the new app version.
Copying and pasting part of a design is another thing we are hoping to fix in the new app version as the parameters changing can be a nuisance.
Bind-off error message is something our software team is aware of, the recommended approach for now is to knit your bind-off at a slow speed (60) otherwise you may find it drops stitches (as previously mentioned by Robert Ingemarsson).
"Got 6, max is 5" error message does tend to come up if there was an error in which you were working. As plasmatopia mentioned if you switch to Pattern view in the app, you can see where the issue is highlighted in red.
Designs overwriting each other, for this we can only recommend to validate and save your design regularly, as well as creating new designs when starting something new.

Bryant, we do have some swatch files available in k-code for the Kniterate machine. I believe you have gained access to these k-code files already when you recieved your machine. If not then just let me know!

And just to confirm, we created this new forum connected to our support page as it was easier accessibility, but you can still access the old forum here.

Thank you for your perseverance. At times it may be frustrating, but we are working hard to smooth out the loose ends. Through these efforts, as well as these helpful tips from others on the forum, you should be able to design and knit something unique and beautiful!

Cadenzaclothes you are not alone!! I have also been super frustrated with trying to just get the Kniterate up and running! I was able to *start* knitting the reward scarf, but the tension was very tight with my yarn. With the help of Katy Grieve I got instructions to change the tension on the .kc code by doing a "find and replace" function in Text Edit. I replaced all the '666666' with '777777' to try and bump up the tension... now when I knit that file it starts on row 14, and then goes to 20, 30, 50, 70, etc. My change must have corrupted the file somehow.

Bryant same here, I wish there was more of a library of swatches to just get started. I'm not even to the point of designing on the software (thought I would wait until the next version arrives), but I'd like to familiarize myself with the machine more and test out some yarns. Unfortunately I haven't even been able to really do that - experiencing plenty of yarn breakage and haven't established a working protocol to salvage a project once a yarn breaks. Do you have one?

Katy Grieve When I learned manual machine knitting, the first thing you learn to do is create a tension swatch in your chosen stitch with 4 or 5 tensions to have a chance to look at the fabric and decide what tension works best for the yarn. You mentioned that there are swatches in our shared folder, is there a swatch like that, perhaps just in jersey? I don't see it.

plasmatopia I'm in awe of what you're able to do! I saw that you put a pdf in the shared folder. I'd like to try knitting that, but I don't see a .kc file in there. Maybe I'm missing something?

Robert Ingemarsson You and Tim are so generous to share your bind-on and offer help. I see the code for your bind-on. What I don't understand is how to take that code and import it into the design software to build something onto it. Do you know how to do that?

UPDATE WITH BINDOFF ISSUES

For anyone else who encountered the problem with the bind off starting from needle 1 rather than the first needle used in the knitted piece, I have discovered that this doesn’t happen if I leave adjusting stitch size, roll down etc till after I have added the bind on. I thought it was necessary to do all adjustments to the main body of the knitting before adding the start and bind off, but it turns out this is not the case. I think perhaps this needs stressing in the instructions!

Cadenzaclothes I have added a new discussion on how we do our bind-offf, and shared our bind-off file for people to see how their bindoff is different. - I think you will find if you follow what we have done, you will have a working bind-off.

LeBrie Rich I am glad you are finding things useful, and its great we are starting to form a community of 'Kniterate' knitters :):). With regards to adding back to the software - I have not done this as I see no point in doing this yet. For now, I produce all my knits with no bind-on - And then just add my 'standard' bindon manually afterwards. When a templating system is available in the software I will definitely add this as one of my standard templates (and share it when we can do that) so we can all use this as a standard way of binding on. We have produced over 300 garments now with no manual bind-on interaction.

Bryant Salvage of lost yarn is a time consuming business, but can be done - just takes patience and rolling the yarns back onto cones for reuse.

For reference, we never use 'new' wool for the bind-on. Every time we knit a garment, we re-use the bindon yarn by unrolling back onto a cone for future bindons.

Since running our production knitwear designs (ie post initial experimentation and 'frustrations' etc) this is the amount of 'waste' yarn we have produced after knitting over 300 garments & over 50 kg wool - The rest has been reused.

I see some really wonderful tips as I am reading through this thread!

Cadenzaclothes Swatches in the shared folder include the k-code for the scarf, the kniterate sample, the machine sample etc. You can try and play with the tensions on those samples, or use the design app to create your own single jersey fabric and try adjusting the tensions/stitch size before saving on the SD card. Also, thank you for your tip with the bind off - we shall update our instructions to better represent this.

Just adding on to LeBrie Rich's comment about editing the K-code. Yes you have to be very careful when editing the k-code if you are not familiar with this method of programming. It must have been a combination of factors which brought up errors when knitting. When you replace ‘6’ with ‘7’ in a k-code, all 6’s in the document will change not just stitch size and this gets messy. But when replacing ‘6666666’ repeating with ‘7777777’ repeating then the rows with this repeated stitch size are automatically changed.

If yarns break, the easiest option would be to re-thread the yarn, and reset the sample. However if the yarn breaks a lot you maybe need to question if the yarns are suitable? Does your yarn break easily if you try to snap it with your hands? If so then the yarns may have experienced too much humidity and are no longer able to be knitted on the machine.

To confirm, we are developing the design app software to make knitting even more user friendly. We are working on creating a new UI, it should be up in a few months, and the first jumper template should be live mid-2021 which is a very exciting step. So pre-programmed items will appear in a garment library format, for e.g. jumpers, scarves, beanies etc. as well as a developed stitch library with existing knitwear stitches for you to use.

Katy Grieve would completely agree - Editing kCode can definitely cause problems if you are not careful, but sometimes necessary at the moment until the new software comes out. We for instance complete all our new designs with our own bindon / bindoff as doing it in the software would just take too long (especially as things stitcj as stitch sizes are not saved in the software and incorrect rows are added to bindon etc)

As such, we have started writing our own kCode validator for our own use to confirm our kCode is valid before we run it on a machine. This is available online for others to use, but with the understanding that we will not guarantee the kCode files afterwards, and that we take no responsibility for the software, or its use.

Cant wait to see the new software when its available.

I also believe that, however amazing the knitereate software is, there will always be people that want to design thair own software (such as being able to take 3D object files and knit from them), or for people to create a 100% automated pipeline from image -> design -> Machine, and we should not dissuade people from this as it will make the community stronger, and drive more sales for Kniterate machines.

Very excited for the jumper template as thats on our roadmap for next winters production.

Cadenzaclothes I have input your designs as from the swatch below, and get exactly the same error - Bindoff in the wrong place and for me validation fails as well (though compile works..)

Katy Grieve Can we have a zoom please so you can show us how to get the software to generate valid code as at the moment its impossible to use the design software to knit a simple swatch...

Also, the software fails to validate but still compiles - This should not happen
